Friedrich of Villach, The Man of Sorrows

Circa 1421
Fresco
Parish church, Mariapfarr, Austria

This surprisingly crude variation on the Man of Sorrows iconographical type is on one of the columns that separate the nave from the right aisle. Christ's right hand directs the view to his bleeding side, while Mary and John lift up two corners of the shroud. There are no instruments of the Passion in the image, nor even a sarcophagus.

The date and attribution to Friedrich of Villach is from Grove, I, 625.
